Meredith's Bat Mitzvah

Meredith's Mardi Gras Bat Mitzvah was this weekend. From what I hear she was calm, cool and collected all day- and didn't slip up at all, absolute perfection! Even her mom couldn't believe how calm she was, (in mom's words...this is my daughter? I must be stressed and nervous enough for the both of us!)

The festivities were held at The Legacy Hotel in Rockville, MD. While dinner was held inside the restaurant, the dance, Adult lounge, and ice cream sundae & candy bar were held in the Meeting Centre, which can accomodate up to 275 guests for a seated dinner reception. Unique Dreams DJ's kept the hundred middle schoolers going strong with a plethora of activites. The DJ, MC and Dancers kept the energy high and led dances. Guests were greeted with mardi gras beads at the door, pop music flowing from the speakers. Faux casino games were available on one side of the dance floor. In the lobby, a photo booth let friends pose for photos, have them printed and put into their choice of fun frames to keep as a souvenir. At 9pm the ice cream sundae bar opened- which kept the kids dancing for another few hours!

The Mardi Gras theme flowed throughout each of the rooms- from balloons and oversized masks in the kids party room, to low, sophisticated centerpieces in the Adult Lounge, to the bright and vibrant centerpieces on teh cocktail rounds and guest tables. Green, purple and gold linens were used intermittently and layered onto one another to create a rich color explosion in the room. Oversized masks and artwork on the walls personalized the space enhanced the overall decor of the room.

Even Meredith's candle lighting ceremony had a hint of Mardi Gras- we put taper candles inside different heights of glasses filled with some special beads she caught while on her service trip to New Orleans.

Mazal tov, Meredith!

Mardi Gras for Meredith

Yesterday I had the pleasure of creating centerpieces for Meredith's upcoming Bat Mitzvah.

Meredith recently took a community service trip to New Orleans. She visited several schools affected by Hurricane Katrina, and after meeting with students, teachers, and parents, she decided that in addition to her service and volunteering, she wanted to leave something for everyone to enjoy. She created a lending library of boardgames for kids to check out like a library book, and be able to share and play with friends and family. Bravo to Meredith, and congrats on the upcoming Bat Mitzvah! Also while in New Orleans, Meredith and her parents went to several parades to really experience the true essence and spirit of Mardi Gras. She really wants to channel that at her upcoming celebration, and I happily agreed!

Here's a sneak peek:

I entered to find this:

Hundreds of masks, feathers, accessories, vases of every shape, bags and bags full of beads (many of which she caught herself at Mardi Gras!)

I was given three charges by her mom:
#1 The adult dinner reception has a color scheme of all white and gold- she'd like to see white, ivory and gold centerpieces, fairly the same.

#2 The kids party will have 30 and 36 inch cocktail tables, and the more color the better. have fun with it.

#3 some of the larger vases will be around the room and on various tables.. looking for as bright and vibrant and funky as possible!

here's what I came up with:

Stay tuned for pics from the big event, to see how it all came together!
